Temperature Extremes
Hot & Arid
(e.g., Arizona, Central Oregon summers, West Texas)- Risk: Overheating, brood drying out.
- AAC Benefit: Thermal mass slows internal heat gain, stabilizes temperatures.
Cold & Snowy
(e.g., Northern Midwest, Rockies, New England)- Risk: Colony freezing, condensation from warm bees.
- AAC Benefit: Insulation + moisture buffering reduce freeze risk and damp buildup.
Humidity & Moisture
High Humidity/Wet
(e.g., Gulf Coast, Pacific Northwest, Appalachia)- Risk: Mold, chalkbrood, wax moths, difficulty drying nectar.
- AAC Benefit: Breathable walls prevent condensation; lower internal RH.
Dry/Air-Desiccating
(e.g., Southwest, Great Basin, High Plains)- Risk: Brood dehydration, dry comb, difficulty maintaining brood humidity and static temps.

Environmental Context
We collect data in the diverse climate of Bend, Oregon, located in the high desert region. This unique area experiences a full range of seasons, each presenting its own challenges and conditions for our beehives. During the summer months, Bend experiences hot days and cool nights that actively challenge our hive’s ability to maintain stable internal temperatures despite the external heat. As fall approaches, temperatures begin to drop, bringing a mix of warm days and chilly evenings.
In winter, cold and often snowy conditions further challenge our AAC Beehive’s insulation capabilities against freezing temperatures. Then, as the season transitions into spring, mild temperatures and increasing rainfall prepare the landscape for a lush rebirth. Throughout the year, these varying conditions allow us to rigorously test and demonstrate the resilience of our hives against the dynamic climate of Bend. Consequently, we ensure that our insulated hive delivers a stable, protective environment for bees throughout every season.
